UK Warehouse Optimisation

A leading UK distributor asked Visku to review warehouse operations at its existing distribution centre, with the aim of identifying practical improvements that could be delivered in the short term.

As the project progressed, it became clear the site would eventually reach capacity. The focus shifted from improving today’s operation to planning for tomorrow’s, combining operational optimisation with the design of a future warehouse that could support continued growth.

The impact in action

Identified more than 20 operational improvement opportunities

Forecast when the existing warehouse would reach capacity

Developed concept layouts for a future distribution centre

Identified automation opportunities and future WMS improvements

"By combining warehouse optimisation with long-term facility planning, we helped the client improve today’s operation while building a clear roadmap for future growth."

How we made it happen

  • Existing Operation Review: We visited the distribution centre and worked with operational teams to understand warehouse processes, transport interactions and the wider operating model.
  • Establish a Reliable Baseline: Operational data was reviewed and cleansed, with growth assumptions agreed to create a reliable baseline for capacity planning despite limited dimensional data.
  • Prioritise Improvement Opportunities: We identified areas of inefficiency and underutilisation across the warehouse, creating an effort-versus-value matrix to prioritise operational improvements and estimate when the existing facility would reach capacity.
  • Future Growth Plans: Following the initial review, Visku designed concept layouts for a new warehouse, giving the client a practical roadmap for future investment, including automation opportunities and warehouse management system improvements.
